Liverpool are interested in Fluminense star Andre Trindade as they continue their pursuit of a new holding midfielder

Andre Trindade is the name on Liverpool lips at the moment after it emerged the Reds hold genuine interest in the Brazil international.

Reports on Tuesday revealed the club had approached Fluminense regarding a possible move for the midfielder, having seen an improved offer worth up to £41m for Romeo Lavia seemingly rejected by Southampton. Put off by the Saints’ £50m asking-price, it remains to be seen if the two sides can reach a compromise, but Andre is seen as one alternative target.

Having waved off both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia last month, it’s well-documented that Liverpool are in need for further midfield recruitments. While they have already brought in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai as part of a long-awaited engine-room revamp, they remain without a senior holding midfielder, with Jurgen Klopp admitting they are looking to address such a fact.

Such a search has seen Andre’s name emerge on the Reds’ radar. While they have been credited with interest in the midfielder for over a year, The Times have reported that Liverpool have shown an increased interest in since he was handed his Brazil debut earlier this summer.

While the Reds’ seemingly sudden interest in Andre might well have caught supporters by surprise, the 22-year-old is a player that club bosses could have been well-aware of for a number of years. After all, they have completed two deals with Fluminense in recent years.

Liverpool loaned midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza to the Brazilian club in 2019, as he returned to his homeland in February and went on to make 47 appearances. Andre admittedly didn’t make his first team breakthrough with Fluminense until the 2020 season, but he was still on the club’s books in the youth ranks at the time.

Yet Allan’s presence at Fluminense did play a part in the Reds’ signing goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga in October 2020.

“In Fluminense we had Allan (on loan), so I spoke to Julian (Ward – then loan pathways and football partnerships manager before being made sporting director) if he saw a little bit of him in training there,” Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg revealed at the time. “He saw him too and was also positive.

“We saw a little bit from the training and the games he was playing for the reserves in Brazil. He was already 16 playing in the reserve team there so you also think, they trust him to play already in the reserves at 16.”
