Arsenal's 2022/23 Premier League campaign showed signs that the club are moving in the right direction once again, following seasons of disappointment and questions over how they can return to their competitive best. An unexpected title push saw them mount a challenge for the league, but in the end Manchester City had too much for them.
The hard work in previous transfer windows paved the way for Mikel Arteta to find the relative success that he had over the past year, but there's still plenty more to come to reach the next level. For the Spaniard, second is a step forward but nothing to celebrate and the next window is an opportunity to strengthen further.
"I am really interested in understanding, reflecting and analysing what we have in the house and what resources we have already," Arteta said on the summer business ahead. "How we can improve and how we can maximise and take players to a different level, the ones we haven't got everything from. Then the bonus will be to make those decisions and improve the team, but as well we don't want to lose that cohesion that exists around the team and that understanding. Hopefully we make the right decisions."
There will be some key decisions ahead, with the return of the Champions League also another conundrum to throw into the mix. However, it appears as though there will be backing for the Gunners, with sporting director Edu Gaspar claiming that the board are ready to help this summer.
The Brazilian told the Evening Standard: "There is still a lot do. We see our squad with a margin to improve. There are different levels of football we can go to as well and we are really excited to start next season as well, because we know where we are.
“We know probably what we need to go for a different level. We receive a lot of support from the board to do what we plan to do. And then, let’s face the summer and see how we are going to finish that to improve our squad.”
The report also claims that there are four priority positions, with Declan Rice a target alongside a central midfielder, a centre-back and a forward. football.london understands that Rice is a priority target for the Gunners this summer, with the likes of Mason Mount and Moises Caicedo also linked.
While it's still a few weeks until the transfer window is open, Arsenal will be keen to get their business over the line and get ready to compete for the title once again.
