Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus started his first Premier League game since November last year as he scored twice in the 4-1 win against Leeds United. The Brazilian converted a first-half penalty kick before adding his second, and the Gunners' third, of the game with a fine finish from Leandro Trossard's low-cross.
Jesus was handed a start by Mikel Arteta as he replaced Bukayo Saka in the starting XI with the England international having struggled with illness this week. The Brazilian has been building up his fitness following a return to action after sustaining a long-term knee injury during the World Cup in Qatar.
The 25-year-old had been sidelined for three months and is now ready to make a huge impact in the final stretch of the season as Arsenal challenge for the Premier League title. The Gunners maintained their eight-point lead over Jesus' former side, Manchester City, after securing three points in a crucial win against Leeds - especially after City had demolished Liverpool in the early kick-off.
Jesus celebrated his first goal since his return by pointing towards the Arsenal physio team before being substituted in the 60th minute as Arteta continues to manage the Brazilian's minutes. Following a brilliant display at the Emirates Stadium, players and staff all congratulated Jesus by giving him a round of applause in the changing rooms.
Speaking after the win, Arteta said: "Delighted for him. They [Arsenal players and staff] all were.We were all clapping for him. He’s been working so hard for the last four or five months with a lot of support from the team and the staff.
"Today he deserved the chance to start. He grabbed the opportunity with a lot of conviction and with two goals."
Next up for the Gunners is a tough test against Liverpool at Anfield, a place where the north Londoners have notoriously struggled in recent years. Jurgen Klopp's side have endured a difficult season but Arsenal must not underestimate the Reds despite beating them 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season.
